Ba dum… “One”

The beats of your heart were guiding me, pathing our way out of here by keeping me in the moment. I felt the sharp taste of blood escape from my mouth, but I had to concentrate at this point. No time to spare.

Ba dum… “Two”

Your head lay still. Lifeless. Yet my mind couldn’t be with you right now. I focussed my attention towards my arm grappling you over your waist. Feeling your heart still dance throughout your body. I felt it in your chest, but couldn’t resist checking your wrist from time to time.

Ba dum… “Three”

Dragging your still and cold body through this dark tunnel wasn’t exactly what I thought we’d be up to right now. At least you were still there, weren’t you? I looked down upon your face. White jots of spit and vomit dripped out of your mouth. No motion or movement though, nothing but the empty promise of your beating pulse.

Ba dum… “Four”

Thank god, your ever slowing heart rate started to scare me. I looked up at the mess we left behind, but quickly turned my attention back towards the end of the tunnel. Beams of sunlight beautifully bursted into openness, it was like God was showing us the way. “Us” that is, Gabriel. We’ll make it out.

My head was in tireless anticipation of the five, dragging you around with an empty promise of survival. You were cold. Your body, still and grey. And worst of all, your heart without a beat.
All I could see while gently letting go of your passed body was the light at the end of the tunnel shutting down before me. Locking us in, where we were alone and empty once again.

The eye comes back. It haunts my vision, mind and soul. But as my lifeline has worn down, all I can do is hope and pray. I lay you down in front of me. My eyelids become heavy and drop as the eye approaches me. As I once more breathe carefully, I hear my heartbeat come alive. And I manage to whisper out a final word while the monster in my head comes closer.

“Five”
